Dear Parents and Guardians
Tena Koutou Katoa
Our mid-year senior exams start in just two weeks time, on Monday 26 May and run through until Wednesday 4 June. There is no study leave for these mid-year exams, so students need to be managing their time carefully to adequately prepare in order to achieve the results of which they are capable. Many of these exams are final assessments towards NCEA internal Achievement Standards. The middle school assessments in core subjects will be held on Thursday 5 June and Friday 6 June. These will count towards the students’ Middle School Graduation Diploma so it is important students study hard and prepare well for these examinations. Year 10 will have option exams on Monday, 9 June.
The Sailing Team competed over the April holidays in Parua Bay, Whangarei, at the national secondary schools sailing championships. Twenty schools were involved who had all come first or second in their region. We
made it through to the top four of Mahurangi, Macleans, Westlake Boys and Tauranga Boys, who sailed against each other three times on the
final day in a match racing event, each team having three boats on the water. Our team finished second overall behind Tauranga Boys with the whole regatta coming down to one final race between the two top schools. This is the third year in a row we have come second. Well done to all the students, staff and parents involved in what is an extremely demanding sport. From our sailing team Rachael Basevi and Donna Hamilton have been selected for the NZ Youth Laser Team and David Hazard has been selected for national youth 420 team.
Congratulations also to James Holder who competed at the national secondary schools karate championships in the April holidays where he won two gold medals and a bronze in his age-group.
The students involved in Stage Challenge again seem very motivated and inspired around the theme of tall “poppies” – they are putting a lot of
time and effort into their rehearsals so we look forward to another excellent production later this term.
Last week we hosted twelve different sporting teams from Mt Roskill Grammar School in our annual exchange between the two schools. It was a very enjoyable day for all involved. Honours were shared with each school winning six games. Results page two.
Our Prefects and Student Executive again represented the school well at the annual ANZAC ceremonies where they laid a wreath to commemorate the 30 past students, from what was then Warkworth District High School, who gave their lives in WW1 and WW2 . Our Head Prefects spoke at the 10:30am Community service and at the school service held last week.
A reminder to all parents that cell phones, ipods etc are no longer allowed at Mahurangi College and will be confiscated if they are seen or heard. Parents can then collect these from the main office.
