Dear Parents and Guardians

Tena Koutou Katoa

The new curriculum, to be implemented in schools by 2010, takes as its starting point a vision of young people as “lifelong learners who are confident, creative and actively involved.” It identifies five key competencies that all young people need to develop in order to “live, learn, work and contribute as active members of their communities.” These competencies are:

• thinking

• using language, symbols and texts

• managing self

• relating to others

• participating and contributing

These key competencies will be developed at all levels and across all areas of the curriculum.

Our staff have started preparing for the new curriculum and in three weeks time, on Friday 27 June, we will have a staff in-service training day at which we will work towards re-designing our school curriculum to fit with the new national curriculum for schools.  Students will not be required to attend school on that day.

Senior exams have run very smoothly and most students should now have their results back.  Many middle school subjects have not required mid year

exams due to ongoing assessment under the middle school graduation diploma, but results thus far can be viewed on-line by logging onto the school website then entering the middle school graduation diploma button using your child’s login name and password. Similarly, senior students can view on our website an update of credits gained towards their NCEA so far this year. The mid year reports at all levels will be issued in 4 weeks time on Friday 4 July, the last day of this term.

Congratulations to:

• Georgia Robertson who has been named as the reserve in the NZ Under 19 Beach Volleyball Team, so will travel to Australia in January for the Australian Champs.  Georgia has been in the NZ Development Team for three years and last year she and her partner finished 6th in the Australian Under 17 Champs.

• Mitchell Joynt who last weekend won the NZ junior 3D archery championships which were held in Massey.

• Manaia Rudolph and Kayne Middleton who have been chosen as members of the NZ Elite Academy of Touch for the most promising U15 and U17 touch players from throughout NZ.  This will be held in Wellington in September this year.

• The school Sailing Team who finished second in the NZ Open Teams racing Championship held over Queens Birthday weekend.  The team that finished 3rd included two past students from our school – Adrian Short and Laurie Dury.

We wish all the students involved in Stage Challenge well for the competition next Friday at the Aotea Centre. The students have worked hard at rehearsals for what I am sure will be another excellent production.  A preview of their performance can be seen the night before, on Thursday 12 June at 6.30pm, when our PTA will host a performance in the new school gymnasium.

Cell phones and ipods must not be taken to school. Students can only have or use a camera at school with prior written permission from a staff member.
