Dear Parents and Guardians

Tena Koutou Katoa

Welcome back to term 3. We are looking forward to another very productive term in student learning. We were pleased with the mid year reports for most students and it is important they maintain their motivation and put a determined effort into their academic study throughout this winter term.

The teaching staff have been putting a lot of preparation into the various teaching strategies required for the new curriculum and our teacher only day at the end of term 2 involved several of our staff sharing best practice within the school, which was extremely valuable for all staff.

We were privileged to host the Prime Minister, Helen Clark, at Mahurangi College on Friday of last week. She spent 40 minutes with our Year 13 students

addressing them on such matters as the importance of education in today’s society and the current state of the world economy, and then answering their questions, explaining what first drew her into politics and how she copes with the pressure of the job. Following this she spent some time with staff and then had a lunch with the management team and some our senior student leaders.

Congratulations to Mrs Newlove and the head prefects with their team of helpers for once again organising another very successful school ball. It was held in the Belfry at Ascension Vineyard and, despite the terrible
weather outside, was a very enjoyable evening.  The students turned up with their sleeping bags prepared to stay the night if so instructed by Civil Defence, but fortunately by the end of the ball the worst of the storm had passed by.
On Monday 28 July we hosted 12 students and three staff from Furudono Junior High School, one of
our two sister schools in Japan. With them was a visiting official from the Japanese Education Department, Mr Mizuno who was involved in setting up our sister school arrangements 15

years ago. Mr Dave Parker, the Warkworth representative on the Rodney District Council, was also involved in setting up the exchange 15 years ago and was able to meet up with Mr Mizuno at the powhiri.

At the end of term 2 we hosted the 45th sporting exchange with Hauraki Plains College.  Most games were very close and competitive but in the end Mahurangi teams won 6 of the 8 events.
