  • If an international student has paid fees to the college and does not attend, then a refund of total fees received will be returned less a $500 administration charge.
  • No tuition refund is given if a student leaves the college for another school or educational institution.
  • No tuition refund is given to the student if the student leaves through disciplinary action, in the college or the homestay.
  • No tuition refund is given if a student, owing to disciplinary or behaviour concerns, is unable to be placed in a Homestay after their arrival.
  • A refund for compassionate or medical reasons will be considered at the discretion of the principal.
  • If an international fee paying student gains New Zealand residency during the course, no further fees are to be paid. A refund of fees will given from the next term following the student’s written application for a refund. Documentation of proof of residency is to be given to the college before the refund is processed.
  • Refunds to students who are absent from their homestay: If a student is away from their homestay for longer than four consecutive nights then they will be entitled to a refund of the nightly payments dating from the fifth night until their return to their homestay.

Fee protection

Mahurangi College has a fee protection policy that ensures that a refund of residual fees can be made to every international student if Mahurangi College cannot – for any unforeseen reason – provide the service that is guaranteed to the student. All fees will be put into a Mahurangi College trust account and downloaded on a term by term basis in arrears.

Insurance

It is compulsory for all international students attending Mahurangi College to have a comprehensive insurance policy to cover themselves against illness, accident, theft, loss or damage of personal items. Mahurangi College will not be liable for any uninsured misfortune.

Full comprehensive insurance can be arranged in advance by the International Student Director.

“Most students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand unless they are:

•a resident or citizen of Australia; or

•a national of the United Kingdom in New Zealand; or

•the holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years or more.

If you do not belong to one of these special categories and you receive medical treatment during your visit, you will be liable for the full costs of that treatment. We strongly recommend that you have insurance that will cover the cost of medical treatment in New Zealand for the duration of your stay in New Zealand. We also strongly recommend that you obtain insurance to cover your travel to and from New Zealand.”

Accommodation and Homestay

All students who apply for and gain places at Mahurangi College will be provided with Homestay accommodation approved and supervised by the College’s accommodation coordinator in accordance with the Code of Practice. Only students living with a parent or legal guardian, or college-approved Designated Care Giver will be permitted to live in accommodation outside the college’s homestay placement system.

The college has run a successful Homestay placement programme for many years. The township of Warkworth and the satellite suburb of Snells Beach have long been an attraction for international students with their proximity to the coastline and rural environment. The college has a list of homestay providers who offer single room accommodation with adequate space for quiet study, laundry, and separate shower and toilet facilities. Mahurangi College is often approached by families to be placed on the college list. All Homestay applicants must complete the college application form and then agree to a homestay check and police vetting procedures.

All homestays are checked regularly by the college (at least twice a year). Students meet regularly with the Director to ensure that their homestay environment is a happy one. Students who do not find their homestay accommodation satisfactory are moved. The college employs a separate homestay inspector who visits the homes and ensures that the accommodation meets the college and Ministry of Education guidelines. The Director also has several meetings per year with homestay providers and a term newsletter so that issues (such as cultural adaptations) relating to the care and welfare of all international students can be discussed and ideas shared. This is particularly helpful to new homestay providers.

In some circumstances, however, a student may for behavioural reasons, not be considered suitable for a homestay family. The college does not guarantee to continually move a student who disrespects the homestay environment and is unwilling to make reasonable adjustments to fit in with a different culture. In such a situation the student may be asked to leave the college.

The Refund Policy of the college will apply.

Homestay Fees

The fee for the Homestay charge is:

NZ $225 per week. There is also a payment of NZ $250 for an initial homestay arrangement. This placement fee is non refundable.

The Homestay invoice is for the duration of the student course (up to a maximum of 46 weeks) and must be paid before arrival.

Mahurangi College reserves the right to remove a student from a homestay if issues of health or safety arise.

Homestays are carefully supervised and regularly inspected. Students have access to the Homestay coordinator 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The coordinator provides ongoing and emergency assistance. Students wishing to change their homestay must discuss this with the coordinator who will arrange a new homestay if it is considered necessary.

Homestay families guarantee to provide a fully furnished room, all meals and laundry.

Travel and Transport

Return airfares are the responsibility of the student.

Transport on first arrival and final departure to / from the college or homestay is provided free. All other transport costs (such as visits by family or return visits home during term time or term holidays) need to be met by the student.
