Mahurangi College is a co-educational Year 7 - 13 (Form 1-7) secondary school of about 1200 students. it is situated on 12.5 hectares of land on the south side of Warkworth, along the tree-lined banks of the Mahurangi River, approximately 45 minutes north of Auckland, New Zealand's largest City.
Mahurangi College has the advantage of country living close to a large urban area.
The Mahurangi community covers an area of 350 square kilometres, the school's students come from the Dome Valley in the North to Puhoi in the south and many travel from both east and west coasts. The area has a total population of approximately 12,000 people.
The natural beauty of the district is found in the numerous beaches of the coastline and the wide open spaces of the farmland. Several regional parks are located in the district, along with popular beach resorts such as Omaha, Snells Beach and Algies Bay, A most popular destination for visitors to the area is Kawau Island, the former home of New Zealand's first Governor General.
In the centre of the district is the town of Warkworth and Mahurangi College. Warkworth is known as the ‘Kowhai’ town in recognition of the beautiful flowering tree that is common in the area. The town is the centre for a growing tourist industry as well as being a service centre for light industry, horticulture, fishing and farming in the area.
The ethnic composition of the area is predominately European, with about 10% Maori and a number of other minority groups. The age composition, although typical of New Zealand, does contain a high proportion of retired people who have moved to the Mahurangi district for its beauty and relaxed lifestyle.
