Mahurangi College has a long tradition of year 13 camping and tramping expeditions on Great Barrier Island. Each year approximately 120 students, parents and staff ferry across from Sandspit to Port Fitzroy for 5 days and 4 nights of challenging backcountry tramping and camping more..

Fashion and Design Courses at Mahurangi College
At Year 11, 12 and 13, students may now follow through an achievement standards based course at all levels.  As these standards are from the technology domain, it is a university- approved subject. Students who choose these courses are generally keen to design and make unique pieces of textile work. more..

Mathex 2012
Five enthusiastic teams with parent supporters headed north to Whangarei to pit their skills against Northland’s sharpest mathematical minds in the annual Northland Mathex competition. As the teacher at the venue, I thought the school’s insistence on a medical kit, slightly over the top. However, I soon came to see the logic behind it. Fortunately, I did not have to use our kit but I did see a student from another school, carried from the floor of Whangarei Boy’s College auditorium with a bent and bleeding foot. I also observed a spectacular collision, although the students walked away with no ill effects. more..

8A - practising to be the Next America's Cup Designers
8A have designed and built land yachts as part of their science study. They identified aspects of their designs that they felt would impact on the speed and tested their hypothesis. Lots of discoveries were made and tenacity was tested as the land yachts nose dived, refused to move and the wind failed to blow! Modifications were discussed and success finally came the way of the budding scientists. more..

iPads success in the Junior Classrooms
During this year the students in the Junior Faculty have had the added bonus of sets of iPads in each of their classrooms. Both the teachers and the students have found these to be a useful tool to enhance learning. Many classes use the ipads for research and junior staff have investigated a range of apps that are supporting students learning, in a variety of curriculum areas. more..

27 Academic Blues presented at the Annual Blues Awards
27 Academic Blues were presented at the Annual Blues Awards along with the Thirlestane Award for the student achieving the highest grade point average at Level 3 in the 2011 NCEA exams, this year won by Nina Su. Ex-pupil Dr James Johnston was the guest speaker. On the night, it was also noted that Mahurangi College gained 15 scholarships in last years examinations as well. Yr 13 experience the Great Barrier Island in 2012.
Thursday 2nd of Feb 10:30pm saw 114 extremely exhausted and disheveled students, staff and parents stumble onto the Sandspit wharf to reclaim their packs, after five days on Great Barrier Island. Despite appearances all were in high spirits and quick to regale loved ones with exaggerated stories of woe and high adventure. more..
