Te Ara Poutama - The Maori Study Centre-the beginnings
The Maori Study Centre, ‘Te Ara Poutama’ started in Sept 2010! The first night saw an excellent turnout with a good variety of students ranging from year 7 to 12!
Students worked collectively discussing issues that they have with current homework and supporting each other. Tauira were able to make the most of the opportunity to concentrate on their own areas of interest.
Sam Turner showed her strength as a tutor with year 9 science students studying for an up-and-coming science test, whist Michael-Lydia Winiana tutored in Social Studies!
Student quotes from session one:
“I learnt heaps”
“It was fun!”
“It’s good to get extra help on subjects I’m struggling with from an older student”
“The chocolate cake was mean!!
So began a comfortable, relaxed environment that continues weekly starting In the Maori classroom and now in the Library, Thursdays from 3.30- 6pm. Drop in any time.
Nau mai. Haere mai.
