Over 500 Ex-pupils enjoyed a great Easter Reunion 2012
During Easter 2012, a reunion to celebrate 150 of local education and 50 years of Mahurangi College was held at the College. Ex-Pupils came from all over New Zealand and from overseas (e.g. Australia and England). A Mix and Mingle was held after registration on friday afternoon and all who attended enjoyed an evening catching up with their peers.
Saturday started off with the flag being raised by Lucy Brooking, a relative of the first principal of Mahurangi College, Cliff Brooking. Pam Hood and Dave Parker unveiled the plaque donated by Jason Morrison Funeral Services to commemorate this reunion. After moving into the hall, Harry Bioletti was called on to ring the bell to open the reunion officially. Dr Tom Brooking, Cliff Brooking's son and ex-pupil, a professor from Otago University, then spoke of the Brooking years, followed by the 3 other principals; Alon Shaw, Rex Grey and David Macleod. Simon Johnston, an ex-pupil and present staff member spoke for the younger Generation. The opening was complemented by items from the Junior Kapahaka, the choir and the school band. At the conclusion, cakes for the 150th reunion (made by Maida Cook) and the 50th reunion (from Chocolate Brown) were cut.
The day then moved to school tours led by the prefects, decade photos, a teachers luncheon followed by Hockey, Rugby and Netball games between ex-pupil teams and present school teams. The ex-pupils appeared to win all the games.
In the evening, a dine and dance was held in the new school Gymnasium. The Gym was an amazing sight and all present had an very enjoyable night with excellent food and entertainment from Lola & the Do Bro’s (ex-pupils Dowling Brothers)
Sunday morning saw people gather again in the hall for a morning service lead by Rev Michael Dymond with address by Rev Kerry Taylor (an ex-pupil)l, followed by Tea and Coffee, Presentations, Tree Planting, Farewells and the Flag was lowered by Alon Shaw, Mahurangi College's second principal.
Many ex-pupils made the effort at the time ( or by email after) to say how much they enjoyed the weekend and were looking forward to 2022 to catch up with their school mates again. Many thanks to the the Reunion Committee and their band of helpers including the wonderful College prefects, who did such an excellent job organising, setting up and clearing up for the reunion
