On Wed 30th May, Thurs 31st May and Fri 1 June, three Senior Maori students represented Mahurangi College at the Nga Manu Korero Regionals for Te Taitokerau Secondary Schools at Bream Bay College. The Students were Ruahei Demant in the Senior Maori Section, Pei Te Hurinui Jones, Michael-Lydia Winiana in the Senior English Section Korimako and Briar Gimblett in the bilingual Section, Ta Himi Henare.
The students spoke with great pride, passion and conviction with Ruahei scoring first equal but with a count back of the impromptu points, she was placed 2nd overall. Ruahei showed great poise and fluency, having to deliver a 12min speech all in Maori and then a 3min impromptu. This was an awesome effort. Michael-Lydia also placed 2nd in the Senior English Section Korimako. For both girls this was the second year in a row that they have been placed second in their respective sections. This was Briar's first attempt at Nga Manu Korero and she was placed a very respectable 7th. Each speaker had a small group to tautoko their speech with a waiata.
Many thanks to Kylee Osborne, Vikki Demant and Jenny Marcoft for helping prepare our students.
