Steven Garner

Hi, I'm Steven Garner. I am a long term resident of Warkworth; so long that I attended Warkworth Primary School (briefly) and am an "old boy" of Mahurangi College. I am very pleased my children and my nieces and nephews and the children and young adults of my peers are also now at Mahurangi College.  I feel I have a vested interest in ensuring the best possible outcomes for our children / students, and this will continue for the next several years.

Having spent time on the current board I am aware that the time required is, at times, significant. The things we have managed to achieve as a school for our students is for me hugely rewarding. The physical things like the new "B" Block, the auditorium, the new Special Needs block, the 1000 things every year that are discussed and addressed at a Board level are things that are visible and areas in which I feel I have been able to contribute and make a significant difference.

Other areas that are not so visible to the community and the real focus of everything the Board does is ensuring continuing high levels of academic student achievement, in addition to sporting, cultural and extra curricular activities which are eminently important and I am very glad to have been involved and to have an influence. In particular I have an interest in raising the standard of achievement of our boys.  In the last 3 years this has been a focus and it has become apparent that this is an area that will require commitment and application to address.  I look forward to an opportunity to continue working in this space.   There are still areas for improvement, items that require attention and things that flow from one year to the next in which continuity and stability is beneficial
