Mahu’s J1 Rugby Team
Mahurangi Rugby Club’s J1 rugby team went down to Christchurch to play in the
Junior Rugby Tournament in the July school holidays. Most of the players in the Under 13s J1 team have been together for at least five seasons, but after this year will be leaving the Mahurangi Junior Rugby Club to play for their colleges, so the club wanted to do something special. Coach Chris Murphy says, “Many of these kids haven’t ventured south of Auckland, let alone stepped on a plane. Methven is at the foot of the Southern Alps, so it will be a real winter experience for our northern kids.”
The team played six games over two days, so the boys were really tired and exhausted after two really long days. They ended up winning the 2nd division and coming third overall. They also won the sportsmanship award for the whole competition which shows that they were showing Mahu PRIDE and great sportsmanship. The J1 team is the smallest team in the North Harbour open weight grade, they are often at least a good 5kg lighter than the rest of the players in the opposition. So the Christchurch boys definitely gave them a good tough game. 23 kids went down and multiple adults also joined in on the fun.
The kids had been working hard selling chocolates, raffles, and mandarins and one of the parents set up a Givealittle page which raised roughly $1400 which was great to see. But the problem was that we didn't have much time to fundraise due to the tournament being in July, rather than having it in September, at the end of our season when we would usually play.
